Questions

What is the 30 sales rule?
Since 2024 in the UK, and since 2023 in the EU under the DAC7 rules, online marketplaces send the tax office details of sellers who make 30 or more sales, or receive more than €2,000 (about £1,700), on that platform in a calendar year.
Do I have to pay tax if I'm reported?
Not necessarily. Reporting is about information, not tax. Selling your own unwanted things usually isn't taxed. Buying or making things to sell for profit is trading, which can be.
Is £1,700 the same as the £1,000 trading allowance?
No. £1,700 (€2,000) is the point where platforms report you. The £1,000 trading allowance is how much trading income you can have in a UK tax year before you need to tell HMRC, and it only matters if you're trading.
