How to sell designer bags on eBay and Vinted

Designer bags are one of the categories where trust matters most. Buyers want to see that a bag is genuine and exactly what condition it's in, so the more proof and detail you can give, the easier it is to sell and the less likely you are to face a dispute.

Before you list

Never list a bag as genuine unless you're sure and can show why: a receipt, card or independent authentication. Selling counterfeits is illegal and banned on every platform. If you have any doubt, get it authenticated before you list, and keep all receipts and correspondence.

What buyers check

  • Proof it's genuine: a receipt, an authenticity card, dust bag, box or a certificate from an authentication service.
  • Serial numbers, date codes or heat stamps, and whether they match the style and era.
  • Corner wear, which is often the first place leather shows use.
  • Handle and strap condition: darkening, cracking or fraying.
  • Hardware: scratches, tarnish, missing pieces and whether zips run smoothly.
  • The lining: stains, pen marks, tears and smells.
  • Shape: whether the bag stands on its own or has slouched or creased.

Photos to take

  1. Front, back and both sides, on a plain background in daylight.
  2. The base and all four corners, close up.
  3. Handles and straps, including where they attach.
  4. Hardware close-ups: clasps, zips, feet and engraved logos.
  5. The interior, open wide, plus the lining in close-up.
  6. The serial number, date code or heat stamp, readable.
  7. Receipts, cards and dust bags you're including (cover personal details on receipts).
  8. Every flaw on its own, close and in focus.

The photo station's shot checklist ticks these off as you go, and it works on your phone.

What to put in the title

  • Start with the brand and the model name, then the size (for example PM, MM, small, medium).
  • Add the material and colour, such as 'black caviar leather' or 'monogram canvas'.
  • Include the hardware colour when it matters to buyers, such as gold or silver.
  • Mention proof that's included, such as receipt or dust bag.
  • Avoid 'authentic' in the title unless you have proof you can show in the listing.

Words buyers search for

  • brand and model name
  • size name (mini, small, PM, MM, GM)
  • leather or material type
  • colour
  • hardware colour
  • crossbody, tote, shoulder bag, clutch
  • with receipt, with dust bag, full set

Measurements and details to include

  • Width at the base, height and depth in centimetres.
  • Handle drop: from the top of the handle to the top of the bag.
  • Strap drop and whether the strap is adjustable or removable.
  • Number of compartments and pockets.
  • Serial number, date code or year of purchase if you know it.

Describing condition

  • Grade honestly and then describe: 'very good, light wear to two base corners, see photos 6 and 7'.
  • Mention any repairs, re-dyeing or professional cleaning, and who did it if you know.
  • Describe smells (smoke, perfume, storage) because buyers can't tell from photos.
  • Say whether the bag holds its shape or has been stuffed for photos.
  • List exactly what's included and what isn't: dust bag, box, strap, receipt, card.

Where it tends to sell

Designer bags tend to suit platforms where buyers can see detailed photos and where there's a formal route for authentication. eBay runs an Authenticity Guarantee for some handbags in some markets, so check whether it applies to your bag and site.

Vinted buyers also look for designer bags, especially contemporary and mid-range brands, and Vinted offers an optional item verification service for some items. Check Vinted's help centre for what's covered in your country.

For high-value bags, many sellers prefer the platform where the buyer's protection and the authentication route are clearest, even if listing takes longer.

Packing and postage

  • Stuff the bag with tissue so it keeps its shape, put it in its dust bag, then box it. Don't post a designer bag in a mailing bag alone.
  • Use a sturdy box with padding on every side so the bag can't move.
  • Use a tracked service with a signature where you can, and record the item's value correctly with the carrier's cover.
  • Weigh and measure the packed box: a boxed bag can be light but bulky, so size usually matters more than weight.
  • Photograph the bag and the packed parcel before sealing it, in case of a dispute.

Not sure which parcel size you need? Check the postage size guide.

Common mistakes

  • Writing 'authentic' or 'genuine' with no proof to back it up.
  • Hiding corner wear or lining stains outside the frame.
  • Leaving out the serial number or date code photo.
  • Posting untracked or without enough cover.
  • Sending without photos of the item and parcel as packed.

Questions

How can I prove my bag is genuine?
The original receipt is the strongest proof. Authenticity cards and dust bags help but can be copied. Independent authentication services and the platforms' own verification options, where available, give buyers more confidence.
Should I show the serial number in full?
Show it clearly enough for buyers to check that it matches the style. Some sellers blur part of it in the main photos and send the full number on request, but buyers of expensive bags usually want to see it.
What if a buyer says my bag is fake?
Follow the platform's dispute process and share your proof. This is why keeping the receipt, photos and any authentication certificate matters, and why tracked postage is worth it.
