How to sell sports gear on eBay and Vinted

Sports gear is bought by people who know exactly what they need: the right size, weight, flex or fit. Give them the specs up front and be honest about wear, especially for anything where safety matters.

Before you list

Be careful with used safety equipment such as helmets, car seats and climbing gear: damage isn't always visible. Many sellers and platforms advise against selling used helmets. Check the platform's rules and never describe used safety gear as safe.

What buyers check

  • Brand and model, and the year if it matters (golf clubs, bikes, rackets).
  • Size and specs: frame size, grip size, shaft flex, weight, boot size.
  • Wear: grips, soles, studs, strings, padding and frames.
  • Safety-critical damage: cracks in helmets or frames, worn brakes.
  • What's included: covers, bags, spare parts, chargers for fitness trackers.
  • Smell and cleanliness, especially for footwear, pads and gloves.

Photos to take

  1. The whole item on a plain background.
  2. The model name, size and spec labels.
  3. Close-ups of wear points: grips, soles, strings, edges.
  4. Any damage or repairs.
  5. Everything included, laid out together.
  6. For bikes, both sides, the drivetrain and the frame size sticker.

The photo station's shot checklist ticks these off as you go, and it works on your phone.

What to put in the title

  • Brand and model first.
  • Then the key spec buyers filter by: size, weight, flex, grip.
  • Then left or right handed where it applies.
  • Then condition and what's included.

Example title

Callaway Rogue ST Max 7 Iron Regular Flex Steel Shaft Right Handed

Words buyers search for

  • golf
  • right handed
  • left handed
  • regular flex
  • football boots
  • studs
  • road bike
  • frame size
  • dumbbells
  • kettlebell
  • yoga mat
  • tennis racket

Measurements and details to include

  • Size as labelled, plus actual measurements where labels vary (frame size, boot insole length).
  • Weight for weights and dumbbells, as marked.
  • Grip size, string tension or shaft flex if marked.
  • Length for skis, boards, bats and clubs.
  • For clothing, use the same measurements as any other garment.

Describing condition

  • Describe wear where it happens: "grips worn", "studs about half worn", "frame has paint chips".
  • Say whether you have used it and roughly how much.
  • Never describe safety equipment as safe or protective if it has been dropped or damaged.
  • Mention any repairs, replaced parts or upgrades.
  • Say if it has been cleaned.

Where it tends to sell

eBay tends to suit specialist equipment such as golf clubs, bike parts and fitness kit, where buyers search by model and spec.

Vinted has a sports category and tends to suit sportswear, trainers, smaller kit and accessories that post easily.

Very heavy or bulky items such as weights benches and bikes are often easier to sell with collection in person.

Packing and postage

  • Heavy kit like weights adds up fast: weigh it packed and check carrier weight limits on the postage guide.
  • Long items like clubs, rackets and skis need a box that fits their length; check the maximum length for your carrier.
  • Protect club heads and racket frames with bubble wrap.
  • Bikes need a bike box and are often best collected.
  • Clean muddy kit before packing.

Not sure which parcel size you need? Check the postage size guide.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving out the size or spec that buyers filter by.
  • Not saying whether golf clubs are left or right handed.
  • Selling a damaged helmet or safety gear as fit for use.
  • Underestimating the weight of weights and having to pay extra postage.
  • Sending muddy or smelly kit.

Questions

Should I sell a used cycle helmet?
Many manufacturers advise replacing a helmet after any impact, and damage may not show. Check the platform's rules and be fully honest about its history, or recycle it instead.
How do I find a bike's frame size?
It's often printed on the frame near the bottom bracket or seat tube. If not, measure the seat tube from the centre of the crank axle to the top and give the measurement.
Can I post dumbbells?
Yes, if the packed weight is within the carrier's limit. Pack them in a strong box and weigh before choosing a service.
